Born out of a basement rehearsal space in Baghdad, Acrassicauda (Latin for “Black Scorpion”) is Iraq’s only heavy metal band. Tutored by music instructor and guitar virtuoso Saad “Yngwie” Say and inspired by western bands like Metallica, Slayer and Slipknot, they began writing and playing metal in 2001. They soon learned that their dream of performing live in Iraq was going to be no easy task.
Original members Firas (bass), Tony (lead guitar), Marwan (drums), Faisal (rhythm guitar) and Waleed (lead vocals) were only able to play 3 shows before the war started in 2003. Soon after, Waleed retired from the band and fled the country, leaving Faisal to fill the void of lead singer. Due to increased security precautions throughout Iraq, it became difficult to practice or even get through a show without serious problems. As the situation worsened in Baghdad they began receiving death threats from insurgent groups and religious fundamentalists accusing them of Satan-worship. Eventually, it proved impossible to find any venue that was safe to perform in.
Thanks to generous donations made on their behalf, the band now resides in Turkey after living a year as refugees in Damascus, Syria. In their seven years as a band they have managed to play only 6 concerts in Baghdad, 2 in Syria and one in Turkey. The war has all but destroyed their dream to live in peace, grow their hair long, bang their heads and play metal as loud as they want. Life in Turkey is proving extremely difficult for them. Acrassicauda is literally a band on the run.
Friends, fans and family... as many of you heard lately we made it to the States, all four of us.
After 8 years of waiting and struggling it feels good now that we all made it and we’ve got high hopes for the future that maybe after all what we’ve been through it’s time to become 4 musicians instead of 4 refugees and finally to stand on stage steps away from everybody that helped us and supported us and believed in the band and its quest.
We’re finished being in purgatory not knowing what’s next, tormented by the bad thoughts of not being able to finish what we started 8 years ago. We were so afraid to let our dream go, so afraid to let it slip away and get sucked in to the burocratic black hole by the people that tell you what to do and what not to do, but I guess we were blessed cuz we had you on our side. Each and every one of you brothers, sisters, wives and husbands, moms and dads, friends and our idols whoever that might be stay true to who you are, you are the reason that we wanted this dream to come true even when it felt impossible cuz we felt that every one of you guys wanted it just like us (or maybe more).
From the bottom of our hearts, that pump every bit of iron and Metal into our veins, we salute you no matter who you are… Arabic, American, German, Mexican, Italian, Japanese, Indian, Pakistani, Norwegian, Danish and many more. I have seen many people from all over the globe gettin under the flag of metal and music in general and becoming one. We just had an idea, no more, but you made it happen, you are the true inspiration. Many times we sat and read your emails and comments and many times I saw some of the guys in Acrassicauda getting tears and space out for many minutes looking at your emails.
Now that we all sit and think about our future as a band we know that every thing that we had been through in the past years of our lives was totally worth it. We set out goal and now we know what is worth living for and what is worth to dying for .
This is the band fourth blog and this is the only possible way to keep in touch with you guys since it’s hard to write to all of you (wish we can). The band still in Istanbul trying to find his way out, continuing the struggling with daily life of refugees and am telling you it’s not easy, not easy at all. Other than crying over our situation the good thing is that we are about to record 3 new demos, most of it are new songs we were able write here in Turkey, hopefully we will be done with them in the 15th of May. So far that is all what we can hold on to cuz there is not much to expect for the near future. The movie will come out soon and that means more media attraction and more new reporters trying to find an interesting headlines to make their way to the first page of the newspaper or a magazine but I guess this is how it goes in the new world. What we still can’t understand is who we really are... the Iraqi heavy metal band or the four iraqi refugees cuz sometimes these 2 different stories doesn’t seems to combine together.
We suppose to be a power source for the people, this is how we think of the heavy metal and this how we see it regarding the fact that we are also passioned about it. Music supposed to give us strength to face our problems in our daily life and some of us got a lot of them but when it comes to be unable embrace your guitar your bass or your drums or any of the instruments which through you are able to express your feelings your passion your rage your anger and so on ... for any of these stupid reasons your family or your neighbors or because you can't afford to rent studio for an hour these things as simple and stupid as they sound it might demolish you, leave you defenseless and slowly it will suck the power of life out of you. Cross fingers hoping you will never get to experience that sometimes it makes you feel like you are cursed for choosing this path and the only gateway is either closed or hard to reach just because who you are or where you from. Every day brings new challenge that you are not up to with out your power sources. Your music, your home, your friends and so much more living of the broken hopes and dreams of the day that you will be able to gain all of them back. The only thing you got in your pocket to rely on is your belief. This is the only thing that keeps us all going forward and not look back.
dear brothers ..fans ..and of course the hard core motherfuckers
we are sorry to tell you that we will not be able to live one of the greatest moments
of our lives (again) for the second time in one year we have been unable to attend one
of the most important film festivals in the world, the Berlin film festival, this is where they will show
our documentary film (heavy metal in baghdad). It was hard for me and the rest of the guys
to sit down back here and write this message for the blog and be unable to be there among the
rest of the world sharing the story of our lives, 8 years of struggle, ambitions, and standing for what
we believed its true. It was so close this time the guys from Berlin film festival tried their best
to help us out through the process with German embassy and the visa thing as well and the guys
from the Vice been busting their asses off as well trying to help to attend this festival but this
time the problem was with our passports serial issue or something like that and yes, it was one
of these days for us were we felt like (....) and (......). We almost nailed it this time but we lost it,
but after all we still got our music and the hope to make it someday and be able to fucking rock.
We still here in Istanbul, fighting our war to survive, luckily we were able to make three concerts here and
it was amazing (that what the ppl said) and we hope we will get to continue together in spite
of all what’s happening along in this journey.
Thanx for your support, it’s what keep pushing us further beyond every limits, AcrassicaudA salute you all.
PS: for any question or comments after the film screening we will be back home eating, practising or sleeping
hey man hope you like it sorry for delaying alot of wrong spealing say hi to every body
breack a'leg tonight

Dear friends and hard core mother fuckers ACRASSICAUDA salute you:
Sorry for not writing any thing about our trip to Turkey but just so you know we are now in Istanbul, Turkey, now.
We made it there and it’s been almost 2 weeks for us here, all of us got here after long trip starting from the the Syrian International airport then to Jordan (i don’t know why the hell for)..?? and then to Istanbul airport in turkey. First i want to thank WHO EVER HELPED US TO MAKE THIS TRIP POSSIBAL, we thank you for that, each and every one of you we want to thank personally for your help it means a lot to us. We had this crazy idea of repaying you guys if we ever made it out there (who knows)...
Second thing I want to talk about is how we got here, you won’t fucking believe it dudes we went twice to the Syrian airport WHY...? Cuz the first time 2 of us got there flight tickets cancelled and got kicked out of the airport, 1st reason was for misspelling a name and 2nd one was cuz of the pictuer in the passport looked fishy, leaving the other 2 guys to wonder if we should go back with out the other 2 members but finally we made our mind to go all together or TO HELL WITH IT. I remember the guy who is in charge telling us when we decided not to go the 2 of us in the last minute that he hold us the reponsibolty if any thing happened to the plane and he said it like he was threatening us ....finally we worked on the 2 guys passports and fixed it (cost 700$) we made ıt to through to turkey at the 10 of October.
Everything here is wierd kinda nobody speaks English or Arabic we don’t know anyone here and you can tell how hard to manage asking about any thing to anybody here, everything so expensive (fucking insane) trying to get hold of anyone but as i already told you we don’t know that much of people here. We got 1 month visa here as Iraqis and after that we don’t know what will happen, my guessing is we will get send to prison then back to Iraq or mabey straight back to Iraq cuz as you already know that we can't go back to Syria cuz of the visa thing so again THE FOUR OF US BACK AGAIN LOST AND BROKE AND WITHOUT GUIDE OUR EVEN EQUEPMENTS OUR PLACE TO STAY IN TURKEY
So for who ever concern if there is any thing you can do to help us or guide us and we mean any thing please step forward ..maybe some people now say we are out of the reasons to let us make this dream come true ...but it takes more than reasons for us to give up what we believe.
METAL RULES
ACRASSICAUDA
PS: anything you need to know feel free to write us on the band web site
First and foremost we would like you to know that this letter have been writing in Thursday midnight from the heart of Syria (Damascus) and the Reason that stands behind the idea of writing this message is to let you know that the Iraqi heavy metal band ACRASSICAUDA that you have been reading about lately and seen it on web sites, TV channels and also heard on radio stations from all around the world is more than just four guys with passion about playing their heavy metal music, there is an idea that stands behind this band and that idea is unbreakable.
Today we want to share this idea with you, and there are a large number of reasons why we want to do that, maybe is this new blog maybe the reason is you, the support, the dedication and most of that finding some one who truly care about us out there in this world.
We sat all together and by (we) we mean (Marwan, Tony, Faisal, Firas) and for more than an hour we have been thinking in this small room of the basement where we live what kind of terms should we use and do we need some smart words but after all we thought we should speak our minds and most important our hearts so thank you for what ever you have been doing and the double horns goes from us to you.
It's been almost 8 years since 2000 till this right moment that we writing the message for you, 6 gigs in Iraq Baghdad, 2 in Damascus Syria, 3 demo songs and God knows how many hours of rehearsing and a lot of days of suffering and bleeding for this cause and we are proud of it. But still hurts when we know that we will not going to be able to go any farther cause even though that the idea behind this band are unbreakable, still not enough to make us be able to be out there sharing these glorious moments with you. We have been denied the right to be there in the film festival of Toronto in Canada for many reasons, as they said in the Canadian embassy for the second time, and as many of you heard that we are not able to perform or to play our music any more as a band all together for a lot of reasons. Plus there is no way to make living so after all there is no chance other than going back to Iraq where the chances of staying alive there are zero%.
So the last thing that hits our mind is to seek your help to get us out of here where we going to be able to live the dream of our life and being out there on stage with you where ever you are.
Thanks to you and who ever helped us including the VICE Magazine who made our voices are able to be heard so thank you for your time and support.
Let the metal unite us let the metal rules.
Yours.
